Have you ever been too afraid to take a step in your business in case it’s the wrong step in the wrong direction? Perhaps you’ve said to yourself, you want to get it right this time so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel, or do something over and over – Even worse, lose money because you didn’t get it right.
When we have certainty of direction, we have courage to take action steps that grow our business. We take the necessary risks that leap-frog that growth and are rewarded with the satisfaction of the success that risk brought us. That in turn helps us feel more and more confident in our decision making and risk taking, which increases the speed at which our business grows.
When we don’t have certainty of direction, we don’t get that business growth or the speed. In fact we can can actually inadvertently sabotage business growth through our inaction or modified actions we take to compensate for the lack of clarity of direction.
We don’t even know we’re sabotaging our business growth, thinking we’re just stagnant or stuck. When in fact we’re actually actively tearing down the foundations for our business to grow.
That being said, I’ve discovered there are 5 ways a lack of certainty could be sabotaging your business, and what you need to do to stop the cycle, then straighten the road so you’re moving toward business growth.
3 Ways You Could Be Sabotaging Your Business
- You’ll do anything to feel a sense of achievement and purpose.
We humans are amazing beings of creative busyness. We’ll take a tactical approach busy ourselves with this marketing tactic, or that lead funnel tactic, or this blog post, that video, this article, that email sequence. We’ll get busy doing stuff without any clarity of direction or strategic development, just so we can feel we have a purpose and progress. As a client of mine. Kate Emmerson, recently said.
“We mistake motion with progress.”If we’re busy implementing all these tactics we must be progressing toward success right. But as Sun Tzu, the great warrior, once said,“Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.”
You can’t strategize without first being clear what direction you’re heading in with your business. So without clear direction all your business is wasting your time. And as that time marches by you’re not getting any younger, real estate prices are going up, inflation is eating away at your savings so that idealic lifestyle you’re went into business to have in the first place seems further and further away, as your working hours each day seems the only thing that’s growing in your business.
- You’ll invest money on the wrong thing.
If you don’t have certainty of your business direction then you don’t have a solid and stable foundation for business growth. It wouldn’t matter what you purchased unless it’s something that gets you clarity of direction and purpose and sets up your business foundation right; then you’re losing money.
Let me explain.
Before I first started out as The Mission Mentor, helping business owners clarify and monetize their life’s mission so they could make more money by making a bigger difference, I was simply helping people find their purpose with no clear direction or certainty of how to get where I thought I wanted to go.
I purchased a coaching program that showed us a model to build your information product online, joint ventured with someone, and set about following the instructions, all before getting the foundation for the venture clarified and our direction certain.
In fact we purchased several programs all adding up to about $10,000 USD (0n my part) to teach us how to build our information business online.Long and short of it was I wasted all that money and time going nowhere. I spent 1.5 years in the wrong business partnership, building lots of free stuff to give away in the hope someone would buy our higher end program, following every tactic every program we purchased said we should do.
That meant I was working on all the free stuff, learning and implementation from 5-7 hours per day (on top of my income generating part of my business).I worked a total of 10-14 hour days, often working through the weekend to build what I thought was going to be a big online business. After 1.5 years of being super busy with all these tactics, we made a total of $5,011 USD in that I had to split with my JV partner. I was out of pocket $10,000 and 1.5 years of my life, struggling to pay bills, in fact, some weeks money never showed up to pay rent, fast approaching the 50-year-old milestone, struggling to lose weight from all that time spent in front of my computer building an online business. It wasn’t until I got laser focused on the details of my life’s mission and purpose, how that integrated into my business so I was making the right type of offers to the right niche market, with the right message, that I actually started to make money. Had I got that laser-focused clarity and certainty first and built my business from there, I would have made approximately $180,000 in those 1.5 years from my efforts instead of $5,011 that I had to share. You could say by lacking certainty of direction that lead to me buying all the right programs at the wrong time, or wrong programs full stop, It cost me $190,000 and my health. Think how much money have you loss in potential earnings, by investing in the right programs and the wrong time, or the wrong programs all together… that had you busy implementing but not getting underwhelming results because you didn’t have the foundational pieces of your purpose and direction in place first!
- You Don’t Take Necessary Risks.
I see new clients come to me in a state of paralysis, because they’re too scared to take the leap of faith required to grow their business. We have to face the fact that business is risky. 80-90% of them fail within their first years in inception.Almost daily, decisions need to be made that require risk.
When you are too afraid to take the necessary calculated risks that will growth your business, then you’re actually actively sabotaging your business growth. You’re not actually stuck or stagnant, you’re sabotaging growth because you need to move on calculated risks to growth.
The greater the certainty of direction you have for your business, the more calculated those risks are and the more confident you are to taking them. The amount of risk you take in business equals the amount the reward available.
- You’ll do anything to feel a sense of achievement and purpose.
You already know that having certainty of your business direction is going to lead to growth. If you’re not growing your business, you’re actually going backwards because inflation and the cost of living keeps going up.
